They faced all the same problems as anyone else who wanted to cross the plains. There were some financial advantages to going by hand-cart instead of covered wagon, and it was marginally faster - but you did have to pull the thing yourself. heavy as sh1t.

They did tend to have less trouble with the Native-Americans, as the main settlements in Utah had a 'It's cheaper to feed them than shoot them' policy that earned them a positive reputation.

First, see the movie 17 Miracles. But to sum it up:

-cold, hypothermia

-disease

-not enough food and water

- just had their little handcarts

- had to walk hundreds of miles.

-hot, heat-related death

-just bad weather in general

-couldn't feed animals

-animals weren't strong enough or needed more care

-people rejected the Mormons, making their lives harder

-so many people died, that people couldn't go on

-insanity

-lost faith

So , in general, the mormons had it bad.

Well, obviously travelling across the country in those days was a challenge no matter what, but many Mormon pioneers faced exceptional challenges. There was starvation, extreme weather, poverty, illness, injuries, wild animals, attacks from unfriendly Native American tribes, and many they met along the way were unwilling to provide assistance. Most Mormons were accustomed to the civilized city life on the East Coast and in Europe, they were unprepared and not knowledgable about the things they would face in the west. Many Mormons were so poor that they could not even afford a wagon and team. These ended up walking, pulling their supplies themselves in a small handcart.
