The pulse is initiated by the stroke of the heart. The pulse that is felt in the arteries is due to the increased pressure created when the ventricles of the heart contracts. The start of the stroke of the heart is initiated by the Sinoatrial node in the right atrium. It is due to a self propagating action potential that potentiates between 60-100 times per minute and is what gives a heart a particular rate. From the SA node, the electrical signal propagates to the atrioventricular node (AV) node, through the node of HIS and into the purkinje fibers. The contraction of the heart begins in the two atrium and ends with the contraction of the ventricles. This corresponds with diastolic (atrial contraction) and (ventricular contraction) systolic blood pressure. The pulse that is felt radially on the arm corresponds with the systolic blood pressure. If the pulse can be felt radially, than the blood pressure is at least 90 mm Hg. Normal BP for an adult is 120/70.

How is pulse related to systole and diastole?

Systole is when a chamber of the heart (i.e. atrial vs. ventricular systole) is contracting. Diastole is when a chamber of the heart is relaxing. Without qualifying which chamber it is usually assumed to mean the left ventricle.Systole refers to when the heart is contracted and diastole refers to when the heart is relaxed.
