After Caesar's death there were further civil wars. The last of these was a contest between Octavian and Marc Antony over who would become the sole ruler of Rome and her territories. Octavian won. He brought the Roman Republic to an end and replaced it with his own absolute rule. He became the first Roman Emperor and started Rome's 503-year period of rule by emperors. He was given the honorary title of Augustus (the venerable one). Historians use the name Augustus for the period when he was the emperor.
