Generally, what you're seeking in top grade malachite is material that has good bright color, contrasting banding, attractive patterns, no soft spots, no cracks, no pitting, and no inclusions of other minerals. An exception to the latter would be when malachite is combined with azurite, which makes for a fabulous and colorful gem.
