The Brown Shirts had been a significant factor for elimination and intimidation of Hitler's political rivals, enabling Hitler to gain power and popularity. The German military would not support Hitler unless the Brown Shirts were eliminated. This meant that Hitler secretly planned and carried the assassination of Roehm and other topp Brown Shirt leaders. With this done, the German military agreed to support Hitler.
