He was from the ancient kingdom of Macedon, not a city-state (which is a different form of government). Macedonia is located in what is, today, North Greece, but in antiquity, there was not a "country" named Greece, with a capital, etc., like today. Greece was a geographic area occupied by multiple, independent city-states (Athens, Corinth, Thebes, Sparta, Eretria, Argos, etc.)

Macedonia also had cities, but not city-STATES. All cities in Macedonia were under the authority of the king. The administrative capital was Pella, and it was here that Alexander was born on July 19, 356 BCE. (Many books give July 20th, but due to when the new moon fell that year, the 6th of Loos was July 19th, not 20th.)

So Alexander was born in the CITY of PELLA, but Pella wasn't a city-state ... and that's more than splitting hairs, as these are two different sorts of political entities.

(Incidentally, the geographical area is called "Macedonia," but the political nation is called "Macedon.")
