It is relatively close to Mexico City, 70 km or 44 miles to the southeast of the Mexican capital, but it is also close to the city of Puebla de Zaragoza, some 71 km or 44 miles northeast of such city. There are several villages close to the volcano, less than 16 km (10 miles) to the cone. Some of them include San Nicolas de los Ranchos (pop: 5,071), Ecatzingo de Hidalgo (pop: 6,284) or San Juan Tehuixtitlan (pop: 5,909).
