There were three separate battlegrounds during the war: 1. Air war over North Vietnam-USAF & USN 2. Riverine War in South Vietnam-USN 3. Ground War in South Vietnam-USMC & US Army North Vietnamese cities located near facilities such as military barracks, tank parks, anti-aircraft sites, harbors, and the capital (Hanoi), fuel depots, ammunition depots, and other military targets were part of the Air War. South Vietnamese cities such as Hue (in I Corps), Saigon (in III Corps), Pleiku, Ahn Khe (II Corps) were close to the war during the TET offensive of '68. Most cities in South Vietnam during this offensive were struck. As a general rule, with the exceptions noted above, most of the fighting took place in the countryside.
