Roger Williams was an English Theologian who immigrated to the colony of Massachusetts in 1631. In 1636 after having been exiled from Massachusetts, he bought land from the Narragansett indian tribe and founded the Providence Plantation. Williams was a strong believer in the freedom of religion, separation of church and state and separatism. He was also a strong believer in the abolishment of slavery and helped found Providence as a haven for dissenters.
