They didn't. The company sent the 104 men to look for gold and not start a colony.
In order for the colony to thrive, Jamestown needed farmers, soldiers and craftsmen. However, the original settlers were English gentlemen unaccustomed to hard labor. The colonists also wasted time searching for gold and silver when they should have been planting crops. As a result, more than half of the settlers were dead within a year.
The colonists settled in Jamestown because they wanted to look for gold and silver.
When the Jamestown colony was built in Virginia, all the colonists were looking for was gold. When there was no gold found except for pyrite (fake gold), the colonists discovered the cash crop of tobacco. The trade of tobacco raised their profits so much that King James called tobacco the "golden leaf" meaning that the tobacco was there form of gold.

Jamestown didn't come to Virginia to settle to look for gold and not to stay as a colony while the Puritans were there to stay and to create a colony.
