It's different for every chicken, as well as different breeds. The average age is 6 months (this also applies for a rooster crowing) My hen laid her first egg about 6 months and 1 week. It also depends on the climate. It might take them longer to lay their first egg if they're in the cold.

brown

you can always tell what color eggs a breed will lay by what color earlobes it has.

even on roosters.

red = brown

white = white

whitish - blue = a creamy color

unless it has muffs and you cant see the earlobes. also a breed like ameraucana that lays blue eggs doesnt have blue earlobes

The Red Rock (aka Red Star or Red Sex-Link) chicken is a cross between a Rhode Island Red rooster and a Plymouth Rock hen. It is a popular breed especially since the female and male chicks are different colors (red sex-linked trait). The hen lays between 250-300 large brown eggs the first year. As with all chickens, egg production is reduced after the first moult and thus the older the hen gets, the fewer eggs she will lay.

Usually a medium size brown egg. This may vary if the bird is a cross breed of any sort.
