The normal temperature for a dog is between 100 and 102 Fahrenheit. Note some breeds can be a bit higher or lower.

Only take an infant's temperature rectally if a doctor or trusted care provider instructs it. Otherwise, the most accurate reading comes from under a baby's armpit.
Rectal
An ear thermometer should be placed carefully in an ear to measure the temperature. The temperature is then taken by an infrared mechanism in the thermometer.
A half minute short bulbed clinical thermometer is necessary. See that the mercury is completely shaken down to 9O°F or so.The bulb of the thermometer should be lightly greased with Vaseline then gently inserted into the rectum at about two inches. An agitated dog can be held by an assistant.Keep the instrument in position for a full minute, remove, wipe with cotton wool dipped in antiseptic, and look at the level.
Meat thermometer.
If you hold the bulb end, the thermometer will measure YOUR temperature instead of the temperature of the medium that you wish to measure.
In this day and age, I would doubt it. That's not to say, certain circumstances wouldn't call for a rectal temperature, such as a high fever or other medical condition warranting a core reading. Otherwise, there should be no need for a rectal temperature during a routine physical.
When calibrating any kind of thermometer in an ice water bath, the temperature should be 0o C or 32o F.
