Scientifically speaking grey is a mixture of black and white. Interior designers often refer to other colours as xxx grey. In order to ask what colours make it, you must specify xxx. For instance battleship grey is an unsaturated turquoise (or similar) and might be made from black, blue, green and white, while dove grey doesn't have the green. There seems to be more or less a consensus among painters, decorators, designers and paint manufacturers as to what all these names mean. Your best bet may be to talk nicely to your local paint shop, and ask for a copy of the colours (with percentages) that are used to make the different "greys". In paintings, artists have used the mixture of complementary colours to achieve "greys" & "blacks" with more life to them. These mixed colours are most frequently used in shadowed areas of paintings.
