A streak plate is used to determine the streak colour of a mineral. You take the mineral and scratch it against the streak plate, and it will create a coloured streak on the plate. The streak is not always the same colour as the mineral itself.
There are a number of circumstances when a hot plate would be used. Cooking is one of these. Hot plates are also extensively used in chemistry laboratories.

Streak is a method used to help identify minerals. A mineral can have very similar characteristics such as luster, colour, hardness, specific gravity ect, but even minerals with very similar characteristics including colour can have different streaks...which is the 'colour' the mineral makes on a scratch plate when drawn accross it in a stroke..thus creating the streak.
Matt Black....
If you use a printer where the three colour cartridges are used to produce black, then the colour cartridges would be used up very quickly. If the three colours are in a fixed unit, then if one colour runs out, the whole cartridge would need to be replaced, even if there were still plenty of colour in the other cartridges. Therefore, it is cheaper to use three individual colour cartridges, that can be replaced separately as each colour is used up, and a separate black cartridge. Black cartridges tend to be larger and cheaper than colour cartridges.
