A battle group in the US Navy is a group of ships (an aircraft carrier with escorts or a group of destroyers) with a set task usually with an admiral in charge, serving on the flag ship. This group will have a name, usually a number (30.1, 33.4, 45.2) and orders to perform some task, a routine patrol, an exercise with a foreign navy, etc. Sometimes
multiple task groups will join together and be task groups 30, 30.1, and 30.2. Usually a task group will change names when it enters a different area of operations. For example, a task group entering the Pacific Ocean from the Atlantic will turn from task group 52 to 7.4. But as to what the task group is composed of-usually a supercarrier for year long tour of duties, and for more intermediate length tasks probably a destroyer or cruiser.
