The cystic duct leaves the gallbladder and joins the common hepatic duct to form the common bile duct, which connects to the small intestine. There is a sphincter that controls the bile flow from the common bile duct to the small intestine, and when it's contracted, the bile that is secreted from the liver travels up the cystic duct to be stored in the gallbladder.
