The continent was Asia. However, more specifically, China, then known as 'Cathay, which is part of the Asian continent.
Marco Polo searched overland, through Central Asia.
However, Columbus, was searching for the 'Indies' by a west ward sea route. Modern India, and Indonesia are both part of the Asian continent.
