Greece pretty much contributed to not just Roman language, but language as we know it today. The Phonecians were one of many tribes in the area that would go on to form Greek city-states. They devloped the Phonecian alphabet. This, in turn, came to be used by Greeks. When the Romans rose to power, they followed the examples of the Greeks in many areas, including writing. Although they made a few small changes, this was how the Latin alphabet was born. After the fall of Rome, Latin continued to be widely spoken in kingdoms throughout Europe, and then gave rise to the Romance languages, which include French, Spanish and Italian. Medieval Church scholars developed lowercase letters in the mid-1200s. The English language, despite being Germanic in origin, has also heavily borrowed these ideas.
