The lenses combine a low velocity explosive and a high velocity explosive. The Low VoD was Baratol (aka Barytol) consisting of TNT and Barium Nitrate. The High VOD was Composition B, a mix of RDX and TNT.
Code names for the two atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 (ending WW2).
Well the only two worth remembering are the atomic bombs Fatman and Littleboy. Each bomb was dropped in Japan which hit Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Each bomb killed hundreds of thousands of Japanese citizens and soldiers. Japan shortly surrendered after that.
On August 6, 1945 Hiroshima was the primary target cityof the Little Boy enriched uranium atomic bomb and the bomb was dropped there. On August 9, 1945 Kokura was the primary target city of the Fatman plutonium atomic bomb, however due to heavy smoke cover from a nearby city that had been firebombed the night before it was not possible for the bombardier to identify the aim point and it was decided to proceed to the secondary target. On August 9, 1945 Nagasaki was the secondary target cityof the Fatman plutonium atomic bomb and the bomb was dropped there, despite heavy cloud cover making it difficult for the bombardier to identify the aim point (as it was the bombardier identified the wrong point, resulting in the Fatman being dropped about 1.9 miles from the planned aim point). The aircraft did not have enough fuel left to consider proceeding to the tertiary target city.
Nobody. They were called Fatman (the Plutonium implosion MK-III bomb) and Little Boy (the Uranium gun MK-I bomb) because of their shapes. There is some mythology that the codenames Little Boy was named after FDR and Fatman was named after Winston Churchill to mislead spies into thinking that the "Silverplate" modified B-29s were being modified to transport those leaders, not a new type of bomb. But this is contradicted by the codename Thin Man (the Plutonium gun MK-II bomb) whose design was canceled before beginning work on the Fatman design. Thin Man would have fit FDR much better than Little Boy did and Little Boy could not have been named for Winston Churchill.
The Enola Gay , a B29 Super Fortress . dropped the "Little Boy" atomic bomb upon the Japanese city Hiroshima . "FatMan" was also dropped by a B29 Super Fortress upon the second Japanese city of Nagasaki . The name of this bomber was Bockscar . See links for further information .
