It just has to be checked out. It can be anything. i just ran into the same situation, when looking at the wiring diagrams only the #4 setting bypasses a resistor, therfore the resistor is bad, it is located on the passenger side under the dash with 4 or so various blue wires going into it with 2 screws holding it in. not sure yet where to get a cheap new one!!!

17 inch rims on a 98 Nissan AltimaYes you can put 17' rims on a 1998 Nissan Altima. The tire size which works best on both axels is 215/45, But based on the body size of the 98 Altima, you might want to go with 18 inch rims.
stick a thermometer in there. Then twiddle the knob and see if it changes.
Nissan owner's manual recommends dot 3 brake fluid. OEM or any other quality brand works.

take it to the Nissan dealer like I did with my 93 altima with heads up display. The first mechanic that tried, suggested this, and it works fine now.

There is a resistor packon the evaporator case and it may be burned out. Have someone look at it.
