What could be wrong with the power mirrors on a 2001 GMC Jimmy the mirrors only go up when the button is pushed to get them back down the mirror has to be push by hand?

If this is affecting both mirrors, then the switch is likely bad. There may be a problem with the drive mechanism. Remove and disassemble the mirror to locate the problem.
