What could cause a 1976 VW Beetle to switch off when almost coming to a stop but only do it intermittently?

Ok, I went to the mechanic and he told me he had replaced a contact that makes sure a valve in the carburetor closes. The contact worked intermittently so hence the problems. (I live abroad and don't master the language quite yet. I think this is what he explaine d me).
