What could cause a 1996 Mercury Sable to be 3 quarts of oil low when you traveled less than 3000 miles since the last oil change?

Sounds like a leak. if you leave it in one place (on and or off) for a period of time, are you noticing any oil dripping onto the ground? Check your pan plug, it may be lose, or you may have a bad hose somewhere. if the oil isn't ont he ground, it may be draining into the enguine somewhere. Most places can look into this for fairly short money.
