What could cause a bad water leak between the engine and the transmission housing on a 93 sedan deville front wheel drive you are told there are 4 small freeze plugs there?

I've never had problems with the freeze plugs but I have had to put 3 water pumps on my 91. That has always caused a, "bad water leak." Sometimes comes out from under the pulley and sometimes comes out from under the pump gasket. The pump/gasket is about 12 inches across and 6 inches tall.
