The Reconstruction era ran from 1865 to 1877. Though in the long run, it really didn't work out.

Reconstruction was only partially successful for a short time. When reconstruction ended, much of the south returned to its racist ways. It remained for the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s to complete the work that might have been accomplished with Reconstruction.

It set limitations on them so it kept them at the bottom of the food chain. Reconstruction ended in 1877 because the military pulled out of the south. The north got tired of spending so much money on the Reconstruction when little was being achieved. Ultimately reconstruction did work just not at the time that the north wanted it to work.
What was life like for the southerners during reconstruction?
It was pretty terrible in states like Georgia that were occupied by federal troops and run by carpetbaggers, scalaways and the lowest class ex-slaves. Taxes were raised, slaves to work the fields were gone and plantation owners could not raise crops to make money, so they lost their farms. The only ones who did well were the poor whites who helped the Yankees. White women were raped and juries were made up of ex-slaves and low-life whites. Read the novel, Gone with the Wind to get an idea.
Why were African-Americans slaves and bought?
They were slaved because since the native Americans could not handle the work because of a disease, the europeans saw that African American people could work much longer and more better.
