The status of both rich and poor women was about the same in the sense that they were both responsible for the domestic duties and the raising of children. However the wealthy women had slaves and freedpersons to assist them and consequently had more leisure time to follow their own interests. The wealthy woman also had more time for personal grooming such as having her hair dressed and curled, having makeup applied, and having her nails clipped and manicured. The poor woman could only dream of such things. There was a major gap between the elite and the common people in ancient Rome with the poor having to scrape and save in order to even eat in some cases, while the wealthy enjoyed the privileges of their class.

Poor women had the same rights as wealthy women -- women were women. In reality, a poor woman had more freedom than a wealthy one as it was acceptable and in many cases expected that a poor woman would go out and work. If a wealthy woman did the same thing it would have been scandalous. The lower class women had the same marriage and dowry rights as their rich sisters, could make a will (if they had anything to leave), could own property and could press charges against another person.
