The allies could have not insisted on an unconditional surrender and cut some kind of deal with the Japanese. I doubt if that would have ended any better than the deal cut by the Coalition forces after Gulf War 1 with Saddam. We could have invaded mainland Japan, who had trained women and children to defend the motherland, with casualities running into the millions.
