Enlightenment philosopher and political scientist, Thomas Hobbes, influenced all of western political thought, including the United States. He argued that man is a selfish animal whose sole priority is to seek the maximum of all finite resources for himself, by any means necessary. The only way to stop man from the use of force and brutality to fulfill his needs at the expense of others, is a strong government that will take away some of man's personal power and rights in exchange for fully protecting the remaining powers.
