France and England, the Allies, later joined by the US
The Cold War was basically a dispute between the US and the Soviet Union for the sole title of the world's only superpower. The Cold War was not literally a war, it was more of a verbal dispute and competition between the US and USSR. After WWII, the US and USSR emerged as the only two superpowers. They then fought for the spot of #1. So it was basically the US & their allies versus the Soviet Union & their allies. At this time, Germany was split into West and East Germany. West Germany was on the US side while East Germany was on the USSR side. They were involved because they were allies of either the US or USSR.
A healthy world economy is very good for the American economy. In addition, the end of WW II was also the beginning of the Cold War, and the US was already recruiting allies.
Everybody chose sides, during the Cold War. Egypt and Syria were Soviet allies, while Turkey, Israel, and Iran were US allies (this was, of course, before the revolution in which Iran became an anti-American theocracy). When Russia invaded Afghanistan, the US aided the mujaheddin.

It was called the 'cold' war because it never erupted into actual war or fighting between Russia and its allies and the US and its allies. But closely linked to the Cold War was the USA's "Containment policy" drawn up by president Truman in the late Fourties. This policy held that Communism must be contained to only the countries were it was in power at the time. It was this policy that in the Fifties led to the Korean war and in the Sixties to the Vietnam war.
False
The Cold War was between the US (and its allies) against the Soviet Union (and its allies). It started in 1945, immediately after WWII. This is because at the end of WWII, the US and Soviet Union proved to be the only two world powers, and the Cold War was a "war" to see who would come out the most powerful. The United States won the "war" in 1991.
