The Spanish were led by Hernando Cortés when they invaded the Aztec empire in 1519, and officially conquered the territory after capturing emperor Cuauhemoc as well as the Aztec empire's capital. Later, under Francisco Pizarro, Spanish soldiers captured the Incan emperor Atahualpa in the Battle of Cajamarca in 1532. This conquest was among the most important operations in Spain's quest to colonize the Americas.
