According to a USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service released in 2006, nearly 100 million metric tons of pork were consumed worldwide in 2006. Increasing urbanization and disposable income has led to a rapid rise in pork consumption in China, where 2006 consumption is 20% higher than in 2002, and a further 5% increase was projected in 2007. 52.5 Million Metric tons(MMt) of pork was consumed in China in the year 2006. Compare that to 20.1 MMt for the EU25 and 9 MMt in the US which are in 2nd and 3rd place respectivley.
