The Yugoslav Federation
The Yugoslav Federation
Bosnia is a region of SE Europe on the Balkan peninsula, which in 2010 is part of the republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Bosnia and Herzegovina were formerly a part of the federation of Yugoslavia, which was broken up by the Yugoslav conflicts (Bosnian War) beginning in May of 1992.HistoryIn the middle ages, Bosnia and Herzegovina was just called "Bosnia", or "Kingdom of Bosnia". Herzegovina is a region of Bosnia, in the middle ages it was called "Hum", but it was renamed to Herzegovina. Ottomans occupied Bosnia, and in the Ottoman empire it was called "Bosnian vilayet". After Ottomans, Austro-Hungary annexed Bosnia, and it was the first time the term "Bosnia and Herzegovina" was used. In Yugoslavia, Bosnia was one of six constituent republics. It's full name was "Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina", and when Yugoslavia broke up, it was called the "Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina.".
Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia were formerly part of Yugoslavia (full name Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia) until declaring independence in 1992.
It is a developing country. 80% of Bosnia's economy was devastated during the war that lasted from 1992 to 1995. At first glance Sarajevo, the capital seems like any other european capital.
Well, what is a country? Let's say that a country is any geographical area that is fully independent from that near/surrounding it, in agreement with this country. Now that that's cleared up, we can say that the first time that Bosnia was known as a 'country' was in 1377, when the Kingdom of Bosnia became independent from both the Kingdom of Hungary and the Byzantine Empire. However, in 1463, the Bosnian Kingdom was conquered by the Ottoman Empire. Being juggled through the hands of the Ottoman empire, Austria-Hungary, and Yugoslavia, the region only re-emerged as a nation following the Yugoslav breakup of 1992. Even then, the nation was known as Bosnia and Herzegovina, and whilst commonly referred to as Bosnia, is still named as such today. So, the only time that Bosnia was: a.) independent, and b.) actually called Bosnia was between 1377 and 1463. But back to the original question: the Kingdom of Bosnia declared independence in 1377. The current nation of Bosnia and Herzegovina became independent in 1992.
Bosnia and Herzegovina got independence on 1. March 1992. when 67% of population voted for independence on referendum.
Hajrudin Hadzikaric died on July 20, 1980, in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina issued a referendum for independence in 1992. Bosnian Serbs, who had been against the referendum boycotted it and formed their own separate country. After Bosnia and Herzegovina declared independence, the Serbian president, Milosevic mobilized his troops to seize Serb territory. War broke out accompanied by the attempted ethnic cleansing of the Muslim Bosniak and Croat population.
Former Yugoslavia is a former communist country that broke into four parts. These parts are now independent countries: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and North Macedonia.
