The first working version of a television was demonstrated in London in 1926. It was the invention of John Logie Baird.
The word Logies was named after John Logie Baird the Scottish TV inventor. It was originally called the Australian Industry Awards but was renamed it the Logies by Grahem Kennedy in 1960 after he won the first 'Star Of The Year' award.
Television was invented in Scotland by John Logie Baird in the 1920s. TV ownership did not start to become general in Scotland until the 1950s and 1960s. It was the same in England.
Like so many inventors, John Logie Baird worked on his invention for years before finally producing the world's first television. The thought processes of an inventor are rambling, disorganized and chaotic until the moments when solutions present themselves. Some of Baird's ideas came from his own thinking but others were gathered from the great minds that had gone before him. Perhaps the most significant idea came from a European engineer and inventor called Paul Nipkow. He patented an idea to use a rotating disc with a series of holes in it to capture an image on paper and turn it into a series of electrical signals. This was the first ever facsimile machine although Nipkow never put it into production. In fact, some say that he never actually built the disc itself. Baird used the idea of the disc but changed its application from a still image capture to a higher speed moving image capture system. The idea of splitting a moving image into a continual stream of data has been the fundamental principle of television ever since. Make no mistake, the small change in application of the disc represented a huge leap forward in technology and a huge idea on the part of Baird.
A US dollar sign was the image that was transmitted. However, in 1925, John Logie Baird transmitted the first televised image in a public demonstration in London. So, the dollar sign was a notable image but not the first.
