Gospel Music originated from a continent rather than a single country.

African slaves who were brought to America were forbidden to maintain their culture through playing their Musical Instruments. To get them through the long, dreary, drudge-filled days working hard out in the fields, they incorporated dance and music from their culture, and their songs focussed on hard work and praising God in the midst of it. This was the origin of Gospel music.

Black people that were brought here wanted to worship in their own joyful, exuberant way , not the dry prayers and staid music od the white folks. Worship music should be joyful, and we'd all be the better for incorporating some into our churches of every Christian denomination.

Gospel music originated in the American South and is still primarily an American genre, although it has spread to other countries as well. Gospel music combines Christian lyrics with American musical forms including jazz, blues, ragtime and bluegrass. Gospel music has its roots in the spirituals composed and sung by African slaves in the 18th and 19th centuries. But it has evolved and changed through the years and is most recognized today as the form it first took in the 1920s when churches encouraged joyful expressions of religious faith.

Which religious group did gospel music originate?

If one means African American gospel, then it obviously started with them - being a mixture of western and African music. If by contemporary gospel music you just mean modern christian music, it might be interesting to know that Martin Luther took a song that was sang in pubs and wrote christian words for that. If I remember correctly it is "A mighty fortress is our God".
