For most of the WWII troops that would depend that would depend on several factors. Since the US entered the war as a result of the Pearl Harbor attack, that must be the starting point and the Defense of the Pacific could be called the first campaign. The defense was still going on in the Phillipenes and Guam. The Battle of Midway (4-7 June 1942) might be considered a cross over point because it was an American victory, but it was still a part of the Defense of the Pacific. Guadalcanal (7 August 1942) was certainly not a defensive action, and should rightly be called the start of a new Campaign in the Pacific.
On the other side of the world the Battle of the Atlantic can claim its genesis long before 7 December 1941 with the Neutrality Patrol which was escorting convoys in support of England. A new phase against Italy and Germany begins with the Invasion of Africa on 8 November 1942. While the US was "involved" in Europe first, the "war" began in the Pacific.
