Although, the US people were also repelled to let Cuba join them due the Latino/Spanish heritage of the state. Also, with the US Civil War still fresh, many were weary about having a state that held a populations that was 1/3 black or mixed. The US still bought Cuba from Spain and exploited Cuba for awhile without annexing the country as an official state with US liberties.
