In Australia, magnesium is found in various forms in the following places: * Queensland: 60km northwest of Rockhampton, in the Kunwarara deposit. Mining of this deposit commenced in 1989. Similar magnesite deposits occur at Yaamba and Triple Four, also in the Rockhampton area. Magnesite occurs near Gunnawarra southwest of Cairns, and in southern Queensland near Kilkivan and at Upper Widgee. * New South Wales: magnesite can be found at Thuddungra, northwest of Young, where it has been mined since 1935. Also at Fifield, about 30 km northwest of Condobolin, Lake Cargellico, Cobar, Nyngan, between Attunga and Warialda. * Tasmania: magnesite is found at Arthur River and in the Lyons River area 50km south west of Burnie. * South Australia: Witchelina, 80km north west of Leigh Creek, Copley, and Myrtle Springs, whilst smaller depositis can be found at Balcanoona and near Robertstown. * Western Australia: hard magnesite occurs 30km east of Ravensthorpe.
