The Soviet Union controlled almost all former nations except for Finland, which remained independent as many German soldiers had continued fighting the Soviets until the Soviets forced them to attack the Germans.

Poland became a Soviet puppet state, and the eastern half of Germany (East Prussia, Silesia, Pomerania) were given to Poland leading to the expulsion of 11 million German civilians and the murder of about 1.5 million. The remainder, which was the Soviet occupation zone of Germany, later formed East Germany, a Soviet puppet state. Yugoslavia remained independent of the USSR, as the Soviets did not want to fight in the mountainous Balkans.

Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria were also under Communist rule from about 1945 till 1989.

The Soviet Union (USSR).

The Soviets more than 'dominated', they oppressed, dictated, murdered, imprisoned, controlled & suppressed Eastern Europeans until the Soviet Union collapsed.

Actualy it was the Soviet Union.

Russia was the dominant state in the Soviet Union but it was not an independent country. Stalin the Soviet leader for example, was from Georgia.
