General Sherman planned a long march into the South's interior and needed a strong line of supply to keep his forces in top battle condition. He knew that Confederate raiders were intent on cutting his lines of supply which needed railway connections. His crucial decision and those of his commanding officers were how many troops were needed to keep the rail lines secure.
