No culture really added it, since pumpkins were growing from a seed. People bought them, and thought it would be cool to see what's inside of them, so someone cut the top off, and got all the gunk out of it. Then they accidentally stabbed the pumpkin, and ended up making a face. Then they put a candle, and that made the jack o' lantern (pumpkin). They decided to put it outside, and other people thought it was cool, so they decided to do it too, and it just passed on. Eventually everyone made it part of Halloween.
