Amsterdam culture is part of the Dutch culture, which is best compared to the genaral culture of northwestern Europe.

Americans traditionally believe that Amsterdam is a hotbed of free drug use, free sex and the boom town of homosexuality. In reality, soft drug use is still not an offence in The Netherlands but the shops where you get the stuff are highly regulated. As to sex and homosexuality, Amsterdam used to be a vanguard city in the 80's and 90's, but by now most capital cities in Europe are at least as liberal as Amsterdam and many have by now become much more fashionable than Amsterdam.
