What damage could you have done to the pool equipment by having poured muriatic acid in the skimmer 3 different times while it was running?

Well, you are well on your way to prematurely replace your pool heater. The pump seal is the next or maybe the first to go. You have not done the pool finish any good either. Let's see then there is the light fixture. The acid has etched all metal and plaster. Why would you pour any pool chemical directly into the skimmer other those that direct you to do so?

I may be wrong but I doubt there is a scum gutter on above ground pools. There may be what is called a skimmer and that is sort of a hollow box like object at one side of the pool - usually located closer to the pool equipment side of the pool. When the pool pump is running you will be able to see water entering the box or skimmer. The purpose of the skimmer is to catch bugs, leaves, etc and to get the water back to the pump. It is part of the circulation system.

Only if they're NOT made of anything that will be dissolved by the acid, such as ABS plastic.

yes you can, just make sure that no one blocks the skimmer or the water return hole.

Most are OK if pool is running. NEVER leave chlorine tablets in skimmer baskets of in ground pools for any length of time. High concentrations of chlorine can damage underground lines. Get a chlorinator.
How do you install a skimmer in an in-ground pool that is 20 years old?
First of all you cut the concrete 2 paralell cuts from pool edge toward the pool equipment, jack hammer out concrete remove old skimmer and coping , plaster, etc, trench out from skimmer location to exist skimmer/drain line,set new skimmer in place plumbin to old skimmer line pour concrete around base of skimmer to set in place, wrap 1/2" rebar drilled and epoxyed into exist pool gunite, build form around skimmer and rebar, pour form with rapid set mortar, pour final layer of finish concrete, replace coping repair plaster and voila you r done
In ground pool when filled up and pump running water is leaking somewhere but will stop after it is under the skimmer could someone please tell what might be wrong?
Best guess is that there is a leak in the return pipe from the skimmer to the pump. Sorry to say its probly not a cheap fix. There also could be a leak at the gasket around the skimmer opening.

Most chemicals for swimming pools are applied directly to the water, not through the skimmer. The only exception to this rule is stabilizer (cya) which is poured directly through the skimmer and is a slow dissolving product. Pouring granular chlorine directly into the skimmer can cause an explosion within the plumbing and equipment due to the gas it creates as it dissolves.
How do you vacuum a Doughboy and where do you plug in the equipment?
In order to vacuumn the pool you must first put in the vacuum and the hose. You can siphon the air out of the hose by putting it in front of the return to dispace all air in the hose line. Then turn off the pump. Insert the end of the vacuum line either into the port at the bottom of the skimmer in the pool or remove the skimmer basket and insert it in the bottom of the skimmer. Then after the line is secure, turn on the pump motor. Your vacuum should be ready to use (manually) or run automatically if you have an automatic pool cleaner such as an Aquabug. If you have a slimline skimmer there is a port located just below the skimmer door it is used for the vac hose. After connecting the hose you put your skimmer lid down inside of skimmer and then you can turn on pump. By doing it this way you can let skimmer basket catch all large debries. This saves on having to backwash so much.
