Silk was not invented in Europe. It was invented in China. Indian monks smuggled the silk worms and mulberry leaves (because they only grow in Eastern Asia) and made silk of their own and sold it to the Europeans for a much lower price. Silk was invented around 2400 BC. I don't know when it got to Europe though. Hope this helps ^^
Silk was not invented in Europe. European royalty became familiar with silk -- which came from the Orient -- during the Crusades.
According to Wikipedia: "According to Chinese tradition, the history of silk began in the 27th century BCE."
When silk was introduced to Europe it changed how people dressed. Only the wealthy could afford it and there were laws dictating what fabrics, colors, and gems could be worn. The majority of fabrics were wool or linen. The finer made fabrics were worn by the wealthy and could be very colorful, but the majority of people wore a scratchy wool over shirt and not in any colors. Fabrics were so precious and valuable they were sold for easy money. People didn't put fabrics on their windows in this time because it was considered wasteful and it was expensive. In the 1700's the Irish began to put lace currants on their windows and because it was considered a wasteful thing to do they were nicknamed "lace currant Irish" meaning that they had money to waste.
