Vesak is an annual holiday observed traditionally by practicing Buddhists in many Asian countries like Nepal, Hong Kong, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Indonesia,Pakistan, India, and Taiwan.[1] Sometimes informally called "Buddha's birthday," it actually encompasses the birth, enlightenment Nirvana, and passing (Parinirvana) of Gautama Buddha. In Mahayana Buddhist traditions, the holiday is known by its Sanskrit name, वैशाख VaiÅ›Äkha, and derived variants of it. The word Vesak itself is the Sinhalese language word (වෙසක්) for the Pali variation, VesÄkha. Vesak is also known as बà¥à¤¦à¥à¤§ पà¥à¤°à¥à¤£à¤¿à¤®à¤¾/বà§à¦¦à§à¦§ পূরà§à¦£à¦¿à¦®à¦¾ Buddha Purnima or बà¥à¤¦à¥à¤§ जयंती/বà§à¦¦à§à¦§ জয়নà§à¦¤à§€ Buddha Jayanti in India, Bangladesh and Nepal, èŠ±ç¥ (Hanamatsuri) in Japan, ì„ì¹´ íƒ„ì‹ ì¼ Seokka Tanshin-il in Korean, 佛誕 (Mandarin: Fódà n, Cantonese: FÄtdà ahn) in Chinese-speaking communities, Pháºt Äảnin Vietnamese, ས་ག་ཟླབ Saga Dawa (sa ga zla ba) in Tibetan, វិសាážáž¶â€‹áž”ូជា Visakha Bochéa in Khmer, วันวิสาขบูชา Visakah Puja (or Visakha Bucha) in Thai, Waisak in Indonesia, වෙසක් පසළොස්වක පà·à¶º Vesak(Wesak) in Sri Lanka and Malaysia. The equivalent festival in Laos is called ວິຊຂບູຊ Vixakha Bouxa and in Myanmar is called ကဆုန္ လပျဲ Ka-sone-la-pyae meaning "Fullmoon Day of Kasone" which is also the second month of the Myanmar Calendar. The exact date of Vesak varies according to the various lunar calendars used in different traditions. In Theravada countries following the Buddhist calendar, it falls on the full moon Uposatha day (typically the 5th or 6th lunar month). In China it is the fourth month in the Chinese lunar calendar, coinciding with the first full moon of that month. The date varies from year to year in the Western Gregorian calendar but falls in April or May. The 2009 date for Vesak as observed by the Dhammayutika and MahÄnikÄya sects of Thai Buddhism is 8 May[2]; 8 May 2009 is also Vesak in Sri Lanka[3]. The 2009 date for Vesak as observed in Singapore is 9 May.[4] found in wikipedia
The exact date of Vesākha varies according to the various lunar calendars used in different traditions. In Theravada countries following the Buddhist calendar, it falls on the full moon Uposatha day (typically the 5th or 6th lunar month). Vesākha Day in China is on the eighth of the fourth month in the Chinese lunar calendar. The date varies from year to year in the Western Gregorian calendar, but falls in April or May.
In 2010 the first full moon day in May is 27 May, However, Myanmar and Cambodia observed the event this year on April 28, 2010.
The full moon day in the month of May.. Well, this is the date that Theravada Buddhists celebrate it. Mahayana Buddhists observe it on different dates. The idea of Vesak is to celebrate the birth, enlightenment and passing-away of Lord Buddha. All three happened on a Vesak(May; Vesak is another name for May too) full moon day. Since it is difficult to calculate the exact date(Lord Buddha was born over 2000 years ago), the idea of celebrating it on the full moon day is more acceptable.
Like many ancient holidays the date of Vesak does not tie exactly into western (Gregorian) calendars the way Christms (for exmple) does with a fixed date. In many ways it is more like Easter's date (the date of Easter is the first Sunday after the Paschal Full moon which is the full moon following the Vernal (March) equinox). The exact date of Vesak also varies according to the various lunar calendars used in different countries and Buddhist traditions. In Theravada countriesit falls on a full moon Uposatha day. This is typically is in the 5th or 6th lunar month. In China and Korea Vesak is on the eighth of the fourth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. While this date varies from year to year in the Western notation it is usually in April or May.
