John 19

31 Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jews did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down.

John 20

The Empty Tomb

1 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. 2 So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!"

Further explanation:

The next day was a special Sabbath this means he was crucified on a Friday and the first day of the week is Sunday. The Bible is clear about this. This was another example Christ gave as to rest on the sabbath from daily work.

There are many who would say that Jesus died on Friday in the afternoon and arose in the early hours of Sunday. But not all Christians believe in this.

A close read of the Scripture will reveal that it was the Passover Day that Jesus ate His last meal and was tried and crucified. The next day began the High Holy Days of Unleavend Bread which is why Jesus had to be quickly taken off the cross and put into the Tomb. He remained there for 3 full nights and 3 full days as was His only sign given of His Messiahship. He arose and was seen some time later in the dark, early mornings of the 1st day of the week - Sunday.

According to the Jewish calendar, days begin as they did in Genesis from sunset to sunset. This being the case, the Passover supper was at the beginning of Tuesday, about 6 P.M.. Jesus was crucified at 6 A. M. and died at 3 P.M. on the daylight portion of Passover, Tuesday (our Wednesday) and was buried. Then in our modern calendar came Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings - 3 full evenings. There were also Thursday, Friday, and Saturday daylight portions - 3 full days. He arose that Saturday exactly 72 hours after He was placed in the Tomb and was seen on the early morning in darkness of Sunday.

Jesus rose on the Sabbath (Saturday) - and Scripture calls Him Lord of the Sabbath, our Eternal rest.
