The French Revolution eventually led to the rise of a powerful dictator, while the American Revolution created a lasting republic.
While both revolutions succeeded at overthrowing an absolute monarch, the two differ fundamentally following their initial abolition of old government. The Americans were able to come together in 1787 and form a stable and exemplary constitution and government following their revolution, calling upon and learning from democratic experiments and theories from the past. The French however opted to discard the past, choosing instead to look solely to the future. So, while the Americans were able to learn from the past, unite under the leadership of George Washington and form the most functional democracy to that date, the French viewed the past as of no worth, soon fell into a "reign of terror," and eventually fell under the rule of yet another absolutist, Napoleon Bonaparte.
France had a few good revolutionist like marquis De Lafayette, but since there conventions were public, the crowd would start yelling so they could not be heard. But the real reason was they were not ready to be a free people, that was because they were not moral and virtuous. Most did not even believe in God, which if you look in the American revolution everyone of the founders believed God, and a high percentage of the American people also believed in God.
So my answer is a quote by Cleon Skousen, "A free people cannot survive under a republican constitution unless they remain virtuous and morally strong."
There were several major differences between the American and French revolutions. In the case of the American revolution, it concerned leaving the British Empire and forming a new nation. In contrast, the French Revolution was concerned with overthrowing the government of France and killing thousands of people who the revolutionaries believed were pro-monarchy. When the French king was removed and executed, more trials took place and more executions took place. In contrast, the American revolution was not a "campaign of terror". The end result of the American revolution was the beginnings of a new form of democratic government. The end result of the French revolution was the coming of a new "king" the Emperor Napoleon.
