Phillips had worked with other abolishionists during the antebellum period to end slavery. His family balieved he was mentally ill for taking part in such a cause. Phillips work didn't end after the Civil War. After the slaves were liberated, Phillips had worked to help them get back on their feet, find jobs, and build homes. Phillips began a Civil Rights Movement in the 1860's and 1870's pushing towards equality for the blacks. His life was dedicated to creating equality among all in America, men, women, blacks, whites, and native Americans.
