The Indian population was destroyed by a number of factors. This extends from war with the Eastern settlers, diseases carried by the Eastern settlers and starvation, especially on the reservations. The destruction of the buffalo herds is, in my opinion, the greatest factor (although some may beg to differ). This is because of the reliance of the nomadic Indian tribes on the herds for food, clothes, and shelter amongst many other necessities. The US Army even gave its ammunition which it was using to fight the Indians to hunters, who would stand on train wagons/cars and shoot hundreds at a time. This meant that the Indians could not longer sustain their lifestyle, and went into population decline.
