The Book of Genesis does not describe Abraham as teaching anything. However, many stories have sprung up about Abraham, without scriptural support.

Bruce Feiler (Abraham) says that probably less than one per cent of the stories told about Abraham appear in The Bible, with an explosion of detail beginning to appear in Jewish tradition from the third century BCE onwards. In contrast to the midrashim, the Bible itself never even credits Abraham with monotheistic beliefs.

Answer:The book of Genesis indeed describes Abraham as a great teacher. He taught both by example and verbally. By example: he gave tithes (Genesis ch.14), strove to raise a family (Genesis ch.15, 17, and 24) which would serve God, made a covenant with God (Genesis ch.15 and 17), welcomed guests into his home (Genesis ch.18) unlike the inhospitable Sodomites (Genesis ch.19), prayed for people (Genesis ch.18), rebuked others when necessary (Genesis ch.20), eulogized and buried the deceased (Genesis ch.23), and fulfilled God's will unquestioningly (Genesis ch.22).

And when he is called a Prince of God (Genesis ch.23), it certainly isn't because of his successes in physical matters. Rather, it was because of his godliness, which included teaching others verbally, which the Torah describes as "calling out in the name of the Lord" (Genesis ch.12). The Talmud does provide further detail, but this is rooted in Torah-verses and unbroken tradition.

what does the story of Abraham teach?

The moral of the story is that God provides. God demands true worship and obedience, and tested that to the utmost by taking Abraham's most treasured possession, at least so it seemed. But, God stopped Abraham from sacrificing his son, and provided a proper sacrifice. Abraham was justified before God for his faith in the God that provides.

Who first taught the Israelites to practice monotheism?

Abraham is conventionally considered the father of monotheism, but there were no Israelites in Abraham's time. Abraham's grandson, Jacob was given the name Israel after he wrestled with someone (his brother? an angel? God?) at the ford of Jabbok. His children were literally the Children of Israel, and the 12 tribes descending from him are collectively referred to as Israelites. Reading this question narrowly, Jacob was the first to teach his children monotheism, something he learned from his father who learned it from Abraham.

How did abraham teach his father his religion and that there is only One God?

well, he didn't really. his father brought him to the king who had him thrown into the fire <what a doting parent>. Abraham did destroy his father's idols though. his father put him in charge of caring for the idols, and Abraham tried to discourage people from bringing them offerings. then he destroyed all the idols and put the axe in the biggest idol's hand. when his father returned home, he was very angry and asked what had happened. Abraham then told his father the biggest idol had destroyed all the others. his father was outraged. "they are stone he screamed "they can not move!" "if that is so" Abraham replied "how can you worship it?"
