Alfred studied volcanoes. Otherwise, he studied Pangaea.

Answer 2 Alfred Wegener had early interests in meteorology, and continental drift. In 1915, he proposed a theory of Continental Drift, and named the proto-continent composite Pangaea. Meaning 'all lands' in 1915.

In technological development there is a phenomenon called "Not invented here" NIH, and is widely used to oppose ideas from outside the organization or club.

Wegener suffered from this, as his early work and publications concerned meteorological subjects, not Geology. Indeed there was even a group in USA formed specifically to oppose his ideas. [The oil geologists!] He did receive some support from du Toit of South Africa, and Arthur Holmes of England. [whose work sits in front of me now].

He noted the apparent fit of [Australia, Madagascar, India] with the west coast of Africa; and of South America with the west coast of Africa; and of the east coast of N America with some of E Europe. He even offered evidence for an Atlantic mid-ocean ridge, as a source of ocean spreading. BUT he was not a Geologist!!! NIH.

His 'continental drift' has been replaced by 'tectonic plates'.

He died during explorations in Greenland, where his body was found the following summer, and re-buried. Thus taking part in continental drift.
